DJI Avata 2 Review – 10 things you NEED to know
1. Battery Life
This drone is rated at 23 minutes compared to the original AV. A which had 18. This might not sound like a lot if you’re used to flying regular drones, but for FPV it is a ton. Realistically, you’re never going to get that on paper battery time, because when they test that they’re literally just hovering in a windless environment. When you’re actually filming stuff, you’re moving around a lot of times its outside, so you get a lot less than that. My typical formula for finding battery times for drones is to divide by two and add six. That’s pretty much true for this as well. For most people that fly this drone, it’s going to be pretty chill and relaxed, getting anywhere from 13 to 16 minutes on each battery. However, if you’re absolutely ripping this thing doing freestyle or long range, you can expect anywhere between 8 and 12 minutes. I would highly recommend getting the fly more combo that comes with three batteries and a cool charging case for convenience.
2. Camera Quality
The camera quality on the DJI Avata 2 is top-notch. It provides crisp and clear footage with a wide field of view, perfect for capturing stunning aerial shots. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced drone pilot, you’ll be impressed with the image and video quality this drone delivers.

Battery Bank with Out Charger
This battery bank is also super nice because it’s actually an out charger as well. Let’s say you’re somewhere, and you forget to charge one of your components or you’re just running low on the battery of your controller, you can use this port as an out charger. Simply plug it into your controller to charge on-the-go.
Improved Video Quality
Arguably the most important upgrade is the video quality. While both the original and the Avata 2 shoot 4K 60 resolution, the new version offers a significant improvement in overall image quality. The image is clearer and more refined, providing a better viewing experience. The original Avata didn’t impress me much in terms of video quality, prompting me to attach a GoPro for better results. Smart Flight Modes
1. Bigger sensor for improved performance in low light
The DJI Avata 2 comes with a larger 1 by 1.3-inch sensor compared to the old 1 by 1.7-inch sensor. This upgrade allows the drone to capture more light, resulting in better performance in low light conditions. This means you can expect clearer and sharper images even in challenging lighting situations.
2. Adjustable sharpness and noise reduction
Similar to the DJI Mini 4 Pro, the Avata 2 allows you to adjust the sharpness and noise reduction settings directly on the drone while you are shooting. This is a significant feature, especially for users who want to avoid the oversharpened look often associated with small sensor devices like action cameras. By adjusting these settings, you can achieve a smoother and more natural-looking image output.
3. Support for 4K 60 HDR video recording
The Avata 2 now supports 4K 60 video recording with HDR capability. This means you can capture footage with enhanced dynamic range, preserving more information in the highlights and shadows of your videos. The result is a more balanced and visually appealing image quality, even in challenging lighting conditions.
4. Dlog M color profile for improved color grading
One of the significant upgrades in the Avata 2 is the inclusion of the Dlog M color profile for color grading. Unlike the previous dciny profile, which was limited in color grading capabilities, Dlog M allows users to extract more information and detail from their footage in post-production. This means you can achieve better color accuracy and more control over the final look of your videos.
Luts for Cinematic Footage
With my drone L pack, if you’re someone looking to get that cinematic feel to your footage, these Luts are perfect for you. I know many people sell Luts, but before I developed mine, I had trouble with packs containing 80 Luts, causing confusion about which one to pick. Over the years, I created just four Luts that I use for color grading every clip posted on Instagram. If you’re interested, you can check them outhere.
Stabilization Upgrade
Stabilization has been significantly upgraded on the DJI Avata 2. As someone who always uses post-processing stabilization software when shooting fpv, I was pleasantly surprised by the internal stabilization of this drone. It is really solid, and many times while filming, I found that using the internal stabilization eliminated the need for an additional post-processing step. The internal stabilization looks great, especially for technical flights and long-range shots.
DJI Avata 2 Review – 10 things you NEED to know
Smooth Cinematic Look
If you’re looking for that perfect cinematic, smooth look, the DJI Avata 2 delivers. By turning off EIS, shooting in wide mode, and stabilizing with gyro flow software, you can achieve stunning footage that rivals professional cinematic productions.
Different Experience for FPV Pilots
For traditional FPV pilots accustomed to shooting with GoPros or other action cameras, using the DJI Avata 2 may feel different. The feed you see through your goggles is the final clip, leading to a unique experience. Manual settings and lower shutter speeds are key for optimal footage, but it may take some adjustment to get used to the cinematic motion blur in real-time.
Cinematic Motion Blur in Goggles
One of the quirks of using the DJI Avata 2 is that the cinematic motion blur you love in your final clip is visible in your goggles. This can be a bit distracting at first, especially when making sharp maneuvers that may result in a moment of blurriness due to the lower frame rate and proper shutter speed settings.
Benefits of Cinematic AF
Despite the adjustment period, the DJI Avata 2 offers cinematic autofocus while flying, giving you a clear preview of what your footage will look like. This can be advantageous for ensuring that your shots are precisely composed and in focus, contributing to the overall cinematic quality of your video.
Sharper Image Expectations
For those accustomed to flying with systems that provide crisp and sharp images, transitioning to the DJI Avata 2 may require some patience. The slight delay in image processing and the presence of cinematic motion blur in real-time may take some getting used to, but the results can be well worth the adjustment period.
Recording Capabilities
When using the DJI Avata 2 with a GoPro on top, you can easily start and stop recording, which is great for capturing multiple individual clips during longer flights. Additionally, you can adjust settings on the go if lighting conditions change by simply pressing the GPS position hold button.
Noise Levels
The original DJI Avata was known for its loud noise levels, even surpassing larger drones. The new Avata 2 features a more spread out body design and three-blade propellers, resulting in a quieter flight experience. This improved design also enhances stability during flights, allowing for more precise maneuvers.

Overall Performance
The DJI Avata 2 delivers exceptional performance in terms of flight stability, camera quality, and overall usability. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced drone pilot, this drone offers a seamless and enjoyable filming experience.
Long Range Capabilities
Obviously, this drone is designed for a little bit more close range, weaving through obstacles, type flight, but it actually handles pretty well long range too. One thing thats happened to me several times, though, is kind of this weird glitch that I actually experienced on the original OFA as well, which is if youre like lets, say: youre, diving down a mountain, and you have to make a really abrupt turn or something you Make the turn sometimes the Drone gets confused for a second and like shoots off in a weird Direction.
Improved Visual Positioning System
This drone now has an upgraded visual positioning system as well with an additional rear facing sensor on top of the downward facing sensor that the first version already had. This just makes it a lot more stable when youre hovering or taking off and Landing just because it has a lot more information about the environment that its in.
Motion Controller
The next thing to cover is the new motion controller because a good chunk of people who bought the original a didn’t even mess around with this normal fpv controller and just flew with the motion controller, which, to be honest, I really didn’t think that I would actually like until I actually tried it – and it was super, super fun and just a completely different way to interface with fpv. You can actually fly some super tight lines and hit small gaps with this thing.
Easy Acro Mode
One of the biggest complaints with the previous models was the limited acrobatic capabilities in FPV mode. With the introduction of Easy Acro mode, DJI has made it simpler to perform flips, rolls, 180 drifts, and other acrobatic maneuvers with just a tap of a button. This feature enhances the overall flying experience and adds an element of fun to the drone.
Frontward Facing Cameras
The frontward facing cameras on the DJI Avata 2 goggles are a highly anticipated feature. By tapping the side of the goggles twice, users can instantly display the view in front of them. This feature allows for a better sense of surroundings, making tasks like taking off and landing easier without the need to remove the goggles. Additionally, the picture-in-picture mode enables users to see both the footage being filmed by the drone and the world around them simultaneously, which can be beneficial for those prone to motion sickness.
Motion Sickness
For individuals who experience motion sickness when flying FPV drones, the frontward facing cameras and picture-in-picture mode on the DJI Avata 2 can help alleviate these issues. By providing a broader view of the surroundings and the ability to see both the drone footage and the environment simultaneously, users may find it easier to manage motion sickness and enjoy their flying experience to the fullest.
Focal Length
Despite the benefits of the frontward facing cameras, some users may find the narrow focal length to be a drawback. This limited field of view may not be suitable for all users, and some may prefer to take off the goggles to get a wider perspective before resuming flight. While the feature has its advantages, it may not cater to everyone’s preferences or needs.
Goggles Design and Battery Life
You’ll notice about the goggles is they have this nubby thing in the front, and that’s actually where the strap is connected. It connects to an adjustable strap SL battery bank in the back, which I love. It feels like it fits a lot better, won’t fall down, and is more comfortable. The battery also lasts up to 3 hours due to the extra space in the design. You can simultaneously charge the goggles while flying, providing essentially unlimited use similar to the drone itself.
Upgraded Technology
The DJI Avata 2 now features O4 technology for better range and connection through obstacles. This upgrade enhances the overall performance of the drone and provides a more reliable flying experience.
Increased Internal Storage Space
An improvement from its predecessor, the Avata 2 now boasts 46 GB of internal storage space, compared to the 20 GB available in the first version. This extra storage capacity is convenient for situations when you forget memory cards and need to store footage internally.
Target Users and Final Recommendation
