DJI Mini 4 Pro Review | The Quintessential MINI drone?
Technology Packed in a Compact Design
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is an impressive device that offers a plethora of features in a compact and lightweight design. With a takeoff weight of less than 250g, it is astonishing to see the amount of technology DJI has managed to pack into this drone. While it may seem like an upgrade to its predecessor, the Mini 3 Pro, rather than a generational leap, there are still notable improvements that make it stand out.
Full Obstacle Avoidance
One of the most welcome additions to the Mini 4 Pro is the full obstacle avoidance feature. This means that the drone is equipped with sensors that help it detect and avoid obstacles, ensuring a safe and smooth flight experience. This feature alone adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind for pilots, especially when flying in challenging environments.
Room for Improvement
Despite the impressive technology packed into the Mini 4 Pro, there are a few areas that could have been improved. One of the main disappointments is the main camera sensor, which remains the same as its predecessor. While the quality is still good, it would have been nice to see an upgrade in this aspect. However, this does not undermine the overall performance and usability of the drone.
Is it Worth Upgrading?
If you are already a user of the Mini 3 Pro, the decision to upgrade to the Mini 4 Pro may not be as compelling. While there are some new features, the similarities between the two models might leave you questioning the necessity of an upgrade. One of the standout features of the Mini 4 Pro is its weight. It weighs just under 250g, even with an SD card and intelligent flight battery installed. This lightweight design allows for easy maneuverability and decreases the risk of damage during flights. However, users should consider the option to set up an intelligent flight Battery Plus, which will exceed the 250g limit. This may subject them to additional regulations during their flights.
Impressive Speed and Battery Life
The Mini 4 Pro offers impressive speed capabilities. It can reach a maximum vertical speed of 5m/s and a maximum horizontal speed of 16m/s when moving forwards. These speeds ensure that users can capture dynamic footage and explore their surroundings with ease. With the standard intelligent flight battery, the Mini 4 Pro can be used for up to 34 minutes on a single charge, according to the manufacturer DJI. Additionally, the drone is capable of covering distances of up to 18km, thanks to its advanced GPS technology.
Accurate Positioning with GPS Technology

The Precision Landing Feature
The DJI Mini 4 Pro comes with a unique feature called Precision Landing, which ensures that the drone lands exactly where it took off. To utilize this feature, it is important to use the automatic takeoff function. Before commencing your flight, allow the drone to hover for a few seconds. When it’s time to land, the Mini 4 Pro will land within just a few inches of its initial takeoff position. This feature enhances the overall user experience and adds to the precision and control of the drone.
The Camera Quality
The Mini 4 Pro boasts impressive camera capabilities. With an imaging sensor of up to 48 megapixels and a 1 over 1.3-inch sensor, the camera delivers exceptional image quality. It is worth noting that the camera’s specifications remain similar to the Mini 3 Pro, meaning that the camera hasn’t seen significant upgrades in the Mini 4 Pro. Nevertheless, all shooting modes from the Mini 3 Pro have been retained in the Mini 4 Pro, including standard video recording in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Additionally, the Mini 4 Pro allows you to shoot in 4K at 100 frames per second for a more immersive slow-motion experience. For even greater slow-motion effects, the drone is capable of shooting at 200 frames per second. However, it is important to mention that the Mini 4 Pro lacks hardware optical zoom. Instead, it offers a digital zoom of up to three times at 4K resolution.
Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance
Safety is a top priority when it comes to drones, and the Mini 4 Pro ensures that with its full omnidirectional obstacle avoidance feature. The drone is equipped with sensors on the bottom, front, and top to detect and avoid any obstacles in its path. This feature provides added assurance, especially when flying in complex environments. Upgraded Video Transmission
Another change from its predecessor, the mini3 Pro, is the upgraded video transmission in the DJI Mini 4 Pro. DJI has introduced the RQ sync 4 technology, which they now simply call “04”. This new technology uses the same Wi-Fi radio transmission as the Mini 3 Pro but offers a higher quality live feed. With the screen controller included with the Mini 4 Pro, users can now enjoy a live feed in 1080p, compared to the 720p available in the Mini 3 Pro. Additionally, both the screen controller and the drone itself come with additional antennas, ensuring a stronger connection.
Improved Connection and Battery Charging
The Mini 4 Pro still employs the oyn technology that made its predecessor so effective. It automatically switches between radio bands and channels to provide the best performance based on the surrounding conditions. This includes optimizing for charging time. While the battery of the Mini 4 Pro may take a little longer to charge, it is advisable to use a fast wool charger. Without a fast charger, charging can take several hours. To ensure uninterrupted shooting, users can also opt for the combo bundle, which includes extra batteries.
DJI Flight App and Unique Features
The DJI Mini 4 Pro comes with the DJI flight app, which offers a number of features not available in the previous model. This app provides users with a comprehensive control interface for the drone and offers additional functionalities. It allows users to access advanced flight settings, capture and edit photos and videos, and even track their drone in real-time. The DJI flight app enhances the overall user experience and makes flying the Mini 4 Pro even more enjoyable.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is a remarkable drone that surpasses its predecessor in terms of video transmission, connection strength, and overall performance. Live View and Flight App Features
So, I’m all set up here with the DJI Mini 4 Pro. The controller itself has a 1080p live view, providing a clear and detailed image. Today, we won’t be needing the antenna for long-range flights, but it’s always good to have it in position for future use.
Let’s get the drone in the air and explore some of the features of the flight app. As I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend using the automatic takeoff feature. This allows for precision landing, should you need it during your flight.
After gaining some altitude, we can dive into the fly app’s features. The app provides all the telemetry data you’ll need for a successful flight. On the bottom left of the screen, you can see the compass telemetry. If you prefer a more traditional map system, the app allows you to change it accordingly.
The app also displays your drone’s location as well as your own, so you always know where the drone is in relation to yourself. This is particularly useful when flying in windy conditions, as the compass telemetry indicates the drone’s banking angle.
Flight Performance and Stability
Now, let’s talk about the flight performance and stability of the DJI Mini 4 Pro. With a maximum altitude of 34 meters and a distance of 45 meters away from our position, the drone performs impressively.
Despite the windy conditions today, the drone maintains stability and maneuverability, thanks to its advanced flight control system. The Mini 4 Pro handles gusts of wind with ease, allowing smooth and controlled flights.
Camera Quality
One of the standout features of the DJI Mini 4 Pro is its camera quality. Equipped with a high-resolution camera, this mini drone captures stunning aerial shots and videos. The 4K resolution ensures crystal-clear footage, while the wide-angle lens allows for capturing a wider perspective.
Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a professional videographer, the camera on the Mini 4 Pro will exceed your expectations. It delivers excellent image quality with vibrant colors and sharp details, making every shot a masterpiece.
Compact and Portable
As its name suggests, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is designed to be compact and portable. Weighing in at just under 250 grams, this mini drone is incredibly lightweight, making it easy to carry around wherever you go.
Its small size also allows for easy storage, whether you’re planning to fit it in your backpack or carry-on luggage. Despite its compactness, the Mini 4 Pro doesn’t compromise on performance or features. It’s a perfect companion for aerial photography enthusiasts on the go.
Battery Life and Charging
The battery life of the DJI Mini 4 Pro is impressive, offering up to 30 minutes of flight time on a single charge. This allows you to capture ample footage without worrying about running out of power.
Charging the Mini 4 Pro is also convenient, thanks to its quick and efficient charging system. The included charger replenishes the battery in a short amount of time, so you can get back to flying and capturing stunning aerial shots.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro: A Review
When it comes to drones, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is often hailed as the quintessential mini drone. Packed with impressive features and advanced technology, this drone has gained a reputation for being reliable and user-friendly.
Precision Landing and Transmission
One of the standout features of the DJI Mini 4 Pro is its precision landing capability. Equipped with two little arrows pointing up and down, this feature ensures that the drone lands precisely where you want it to. This is particularly useful when flying in tight spaces or areas with obstacles.
In terms of transmission, the DJI Mini 4 Pro provides a strong and stable connection. With a full set of five bars, you can trust that your live feed and controls will be uninterrupted. This is particularly important when flying the drone at longer distances.
Battery Life and Indicator
Another crucial aspect of any drone is its battery life. The DJI Mini 4 Pro comes with a battery indicator that uses three colors: green, amber, and red. If the indicator shows green, it means the software predicts that you will be able to safely return the drone without running out of battery. However, when it enters the amber or red zone, it’s a clear sign that you need to land the drone as soon as possible to avoid any issues.
Fortunately, the DJI Mini 4 Pro has built-in safety features to prevent sudden falls from the sky. If the battery level becomes dangerously low and you haven’t landed it manually, the drone will initiate a forced landing. While this is a helpful failsafe, it is best to avoid reaching this point as it may result in inconvenience or the need to track down the drone.
There are three modes available in the DJI Mini 4 Pro: cine mode, normal mode, and sports mode. Each mode offers different functionalities and capabilities.
Cine mode, also known as slow mode, is perfect for capturing cinematic shots. It allows for smooth and graceful movements, making it ideal for creating professional-looking videos.
The normal mode is the default mode and provides a balanced and versatile experience. It is suitable for general use and captures footage at a standard speed and quality.
On the other hand, sports mode is designed for those who want to push the limits of speed and agility. In this mode, the drone can reach impressive speeds both vertically and horizontally, up to 16 meters per second. However, it is important to note that obstacle avoidance is disabled in sports mode, so caution must be exercised when flying in this mode.
In a windless environment, sports mode can truly shine and deliver thrilling flying experiences. It is perfect for enthusiasts who enjoy high-speed flights and aerobatic maneuvers.
Let’s explore some of the settings available in the DJI Mini 4 Pro. Head over to the camera settings, and you will find several options such as photo, video, Master shots, quick shots, hyperlapse, and Pano.
The photo mode allows you to take high-resolution images with the drone’s built-in camera. You can capture stunning aerial photographs from unique perspectives.
Video mode is where the DJI Mini 4 Pro truly shines. It offers a variety of shooting options, including standard mode, night mode, and slow motion. If you want to capture ultra-smooth slow-motion footage at 100 frames per second in 4K resolution, then slow motion mode is the way to go. Additionally, you can choose between 4K resolution at 100 FPS or 1080P resolution at either 100 or 200 FPS.
Moving on to Master shots, this feature is particularly interesting. It may be considered a gimmick by some, but it has the potential to create stunning and unique shots. The drone automatically takes a series of shots, and the accompanying software edits them into a captivating video clip with added music.
Master shots provide an effortless way to capture impressive footage without requiring any extensive editing skills. It adds a touch of creativity to your aerial photography and videography.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is an outstanding mini drone that offers a range of impressive features and capabilities. From its cine mode for cinematic shots to its sports mode for high-speed flights, this drone delivers on various fronts. The camera settings provide flexibility and options for capturing stunning images and videos. Whether you are a professional filmmaker or an aerial photography enthusiast, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is definitely worth considering.
Quick Shots
One of the standout features of the DJI Mini 4 Pro is its selection of inbuilt quick shots. These shots allow the drone to perform various actions automatically, making your life easier. For example, there’s the Rocket Dronie, which captures an ascending shot, and the Circle, which creates an orbiting effect. These quick shots are not only fun to use but also perfect for sharing on social media.
Hyperlapse
The hyperlapse feature is something that I find myself using regularly. If you’re not familiar with hyperlapse, it involves the drone taking multiple photographs while moving slowly. These photos are then stitched together using software to create an impressive time-lapse video. The DJI Mini 4 Pro makes capturing hyperlapse shots effortless and the results are truly stunning.
Waypoint Course
The DJI Mini 4 Pro offers the Waypoint course shooting option. While this feature was available on the previous Mini 3 Pro model, it has been officially introduced for the first time in the Mini series with the Mini 4 Pro. Waypoint course allows you to pre-plan a specific flight path for your drone, ensuring precise and controlled footage. This feature opens up new creative possibilities and is a welcome addition to the Mini 4 Pro.
Pano Shots
If you’re looking to capture larger, more detailed images, the Mini 4 Pro’s Pano feature is perfect. This shooting option stitches together multiple photographs to create a panoramic image. There are several options to choose from, allowing you to capture stunning landscapes and expansive scenes with ease. Whether you’re a professional photographer or a hobbyist, the Pano feature on the DJI Mini 4 Pro will elevate your aerial photography.
Pro Mode and ND Filters
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is compatible with ND filters, which are an excellent addition for capturing high-quality footage in varying lighting conditions. In Pro mode, you can adjust the ISO rating, shutter speed, and other exposure settings, giving you full control over the final result. These manual adjustments, combined with the use of ND filters, ensure that you can achieve the desired look and feel for your aerial shots.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro: A Review of the Quintessential MINI Drone
If you are a photography enthusiast who is on the lookout for a drone that can capture stunning imagery with manual settings, then the DJI Mini 4 Pro might just be the perfect fit for you. This compact drone is equipped with features that will allow you to unleash your creative potential and take your aerial photography to new heights.
Gimbal: A Game-Changing Feature
One of the standout features of the Mini 4 Pro is its gimbal. With just a simple tap of a button, you can switch the gimbal into vertical shooting mode, enabling you to capture breathtaking vertical shots. This is not just a reduction in the number of pixels, but the entire camera itself switches vertically, ensuring that you still get the same high-quality 4K imagery. Although there is no optical zoom, the 4K resolution allows for digital zoom of up to three times. Moreover, the settings menu offers various adjustments that can be made, including obstacle avoidance settings.
Obstacle Avoidance: A Valuable Safety Feature
When it comes to flying a drone, safety is of utmost importance. The Mini 4 Pro offers obstacle avoidance settings that provide an added layer of security while capturing aerial shots. The settings menu allows you to choose between turning obstacle avoidance off, using the brake option, or enabling the bypass mode. It is advisable to keep the brake option selected, as it automatically slows down and stops the drone before a collision occurs. With the bypass option, the drone attempts to find an alternative route to avoid obstacles. However, it is important to note that the safest option is the brake mode, as it reduces the likelihood of accidents.
Return to Home: A Convenient and Reliable Function
The Mini 4 Pro also offers a convenient feature known as the “return to home.” This standard feature ensures that your drone can safely return to its takeoff point with just a press of a button. Whether you have ventured far or are facing low battery, activating the return to home function gives you peace of mind knowing that your drone will autonomously navigate its way back.
AR Mode: A Personal Choice
Finally, the Mini 4 Pro comes with an AR mode, which stands for augmented reality. This feature, however, is subjective and depends entirely on personal preference. Some drone pilots prefer to turn off this mode, while others find it enhances their flying experience. It is worth experimenting with AR mode to determine if it aligns with your individual preferences and needs.

AR Home Points and Shadow Option
I find the show aircraft Shadow option to be a bit gimmicky. However, enabling it does help with landings. I also have the AR home points enabled, which allows me to see my actual location on the live view no matter how far I fly. This feature is helpful in ensuring a safe return of the drone.
Return to Home Route
I have disabled the return to home route feature as I find it unnecessary and it only clutters the screen. I prefer to rely on the AR home points for navigation when bringing the drone back safely.
Find My Drone
Thankfully, I have never had to use the find my drone feature. However, in case of an emergency landing or a crash, this feature can help locate and retrieve the drone under the control menu.
Camera Settings and Options
The DJI Mini 4 Pro offers various camera settings that can be changed to suit your preferences. For instance, you can shoot in 10-bit dlog if you want to enhance the quality of your footage. These settings can be adjusted in the control menu.
Testing the Return to Home Feature
To showcase the return to home feature in action, I will take the drone to a distance of approximately 65 meters away. This will provide enough distance to demonstrate how the drone safely returns to its starting point using the predefined route.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro offers useful features like AR home points and a find my drone function for added convenience and peace of mind. The return to home feature can be a valuable asset in safely retrieving the drone in case of emergencies or crashes. With adjustable camera settings, this mini drone proves to be a versatile choice for aerial photography and videography enthusiasts.
Return to Home Feature
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is equipped with a convenient return to home feature that ensures the drone’s safe return in case it gets lost or loses connection. This feature can also be triggered manually and has a range of about 300 meters. By simply tapping the returns to home button on the controller, the drone will automatically fly back to its takeoff location, thanks to its Precision Landing capability. This feature proves to be impressively accurate, as it landed within 6 inches of its original position during our test.
Precision Landing and Active Track
One of the standout features of the Mini 4 Pro is its Precision Landing capability. This allows the drone to land precisely at its takeoff location, making it convenient for users who want consistent and accurate landings. During our test, the drone successfully returned to its original location with pinpoint accuracy, giving us confidence in this feature’s reliability.
In addition to Precision Landing, the Mini 4 Pro also offers an active track feature, which works exceptionally well. By selecting the subject on the controller, the drone can intelligently track and follow the designated target. During our test, we chose ourselves as the subject and found that the drone effortlessly kept us in the frame, using obstacle avoidance to ensure our safety while moving around trees.
Easy Control and Automation
One of the advantages of the Mini 4 Pro is its ease of use and automation. With the active track feature, users can simply let the drone take care of all the movements, without the need for manual control. This not only simplifies the flying experience but also allows users to focus on other aspects, such as capturing the perfect shot.
Furthermore, the return to home feature adds an extra layer of convenience, as users can easily trigger the drone to come back to its takeoff location with just a tap of a button. This feature can be especially useful in situations where the drone may become lost or when connection is lost.
Landing and Waypoint Feature
The DJI Mini 4 Pro drone offers a unique feature called Waypoint, which was not available in its predecessor, the Mini 3 Pro. With Waypoint, users can plan their flight paths in advance by plotting points on the map. The drone will then automatically navigate through these points, ensuring a smooth and professional-looking flight. Alternatively, users can manually fly the drone to each point and add them as waypoints. This feature adds convenience and precision to the overall flying experience.
