Introduction
The original avatar from DJI um is this new model? Better definitely uh. Is it great for non fpv Flyers like me, absolutely can you crash it repeatedly uh? Does it make make my mini4 Pro seem as slow as Driving Miss Daisy? Sadly, yes.
Testing Experience
Hello, I’m here and I play with drones and after playing around with the Avatar 2 for a week, I can honestly say I have never had as much fun flying a drone as I have had with this one. I’m at the Newber Farm plants in Silone, Bedfordshire, making the most of the latest FPV model from DJI.
Flight Performance
Despite being an experienced drone flyer, I never seem to get the most out of true FPV flying. The Avatar 2 flies close to obstacles but maneuvers to avoid crashing, making it great for those who want the thrill without the risk. Even if you do crash, it has built-in mechanisms to get back up in the air quickly.
Comparison to Original Avatar
The Avatar 2 is similar to the original Avatar, with some improvements that make it even more fun and user-friendly. The flying experience is enhanced, making it a great option for both beginners and experienced pilots.
Improved Design Features
What was great about the Avatar, but it has improved or fixed what was wrong um, some of the basics uh. You can see its got roughly the same design uh. These super tough wraparound bumpers, protecting the props and body itself. This design is brilliant and it saved my previous Avatar when I crashed it at high speed straight into a stone wall in Malta last year, no cracks no damage and pretty much. No scratches, thanks to the tough rubberized finish and the new Avatar 2 has exactly the same bumpers, which saves the props. If you do hit something and uh you will frankly, because if you dont crash, then you are not getting the most out of this drone.
Improved Propellers and Noise Level
You’ll notice, the props are different, though there were five blades on the original Avatar, only three on the Avatar 2, and that has definitely made things a bit quieter. You can see in comparison, we’ve lost the whiny on the original Avatar, so big Improvement Music there. The battery is now done properly as well its protected inside the body as well. The previous Avatar had the battery actually exposed as part of the body itself, which could of course have got damaged if you crashed so better battery protection as well.
Lighter Weight for Longer Flight Time
Whole unit is a bit lighter its coming in at 377 G thats, around 40 g 2 oz, lighter than the original Avatar, and that lighter weight of course, is going to give you a longer flight time which, in the world of fpv, is always painfully short.
Improved Flight Performance
The DJI Avatar 2 boasts impressive flight performance, with an increased maximum flight time of 23 minutes in comparison to its predecessor. Real-world testing has shown a flight time range of 17 to 19 minutes, making it ideal for extended FPV sessions. The drone now features faster ascent and descent speeds in sports mode, enhancing the overall flying experience.
Enhanced Speed and Control
The Avatar 2 offers improved speeds with a faster horizontal speed of up to 16 m/s in sports mode. This allows for quicker and more dynamic flight maneuvers, providing users with greater control over the drone. However, it’s important to note that manual mode can only be accessed with the proper remote control, not the motion controller.
Upgraded Camera and Gimbal
The camera and gimbal of the DJI Avatar 2 have undergone significant improvements, offering a greater range of movement and better stabilization. The camera now features the same sensor size as the Mini 4 Pro and the A3, ensuring high-quality video recording at a maximum bit rate of 130 megabits per second. Additionally, users have the option to film in D log M for enhanced color processing.
Increased Storage Capacity
Another notable upgrade is the more than doubled internal storage of 46 GB, allowing users to capture and store a larger amount of footage. With this increased storage capacity, users can record up to an hour of 4K video at 60 frames per second, making it easier to document their FPV adventures.
Improved Design Features
The DJI Avata 2 comes with some major improvements in design compared to its predecessor. One of the key upgrades is the relocation of the micro SD card and USB slot. In the original Avata, these were located inside the rim of the props, making it incredibly difficult to access. However, the new Avata 2 has a convenient trap door on the side of the body, allowing easy access to both the USB and micro SD card slots. This simple fix by DJI has solved a major inconvenience for users.
Enhanced Goggles
Another notable improvement in the Avata 2 is the upgraded goggles. The new Goggles 3 have completely raised the bar in terms of functionality and usability. Gone is the cumbersome dangling battery that had to be connected and stuffed into a pocket. The battery is now housed in a compact backpack attached to the goggles. Additionally, the backpack features an easy-to-use dial for adjusting the strap, providing a comfortable and secure fit while flying. The Goggles 3 have undergone a significant makeover, eliminating the need for the vague touchpad control that was present in the previous model.
The DJI Avata 2 Ready-Made FPV Review
Let’s dive into a full review of the DJI Avata 2 Ready-Made FPV, exploring its features, performance, and overall user experience.
Design and Build Quality
The DJI Avata 2 comes with a five-way toggle button, a backup button, and a power button for easy navigation and control. The design includes a micro USB card slot for recording, providing convenience for users. The face contact material may feel cheaper compared to thick foam goggles, but it is designed for comfort and reduced pressure on the face. The soft foam contours to the face, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods.
Performance and Specs
The DJI Avata 2 boasts impressive specs, including 1080p high-definition vision with low latency for a live flying experience. The new video transmission technology ensures a stable and clear signal even in challenging conditions. Compared to its predecessor, the Avatar 2 offers better video retention, even when flying low or behind obstacles. The improved transmission signal allows for uninterrupted flying experience and the option to capture footage on a micro SD card.
User Experience and Comfort
The DJI Avata 2 provides a comfortable and immersive flying experience for users. The lightweight design and soft foam padding reduce pressure on the face, allowing for extended use without discomfort. The FPV goggles are designed to fit securely and provide a clear view of the flight, enhancing the overall flying experience.
Recording Options and Features
When you are flying the DJI Avata 2, you have the option to record on the micro SD card on the goggles. You can choose to have all the Telemetry and information recorded as well, or simply switch that off and just have a backup of the main video itself. This backup can be crucial, especially in situations where a crash could potentially mean the end of your drone.
External Camera Feature
The DJI Avata 2 also comes with two external cameras on the goggles, which provide a live view of your surroundings. This feature allows you to see what’s going on around you without having to remove your goggles. It can be accessed by double tapping either side of the goggles, giving you a real-time view of the Drone lifting off or any other activities happening around you.
Picture-in-Picture View
You can adjust the settings on the DJI Avata 2 to give you a picture-in-picture view, where you can see the drone’s camera view in the upper left corner while still being able to view your surroundings in real-time. This feature is incredibly useful, especially during take-off and when you need to keep an eye on both the drone’s perspective and the actual environment simultaneously.
Motion Controller 3 Updates
Another notable update in the DJI Avata 2 is the Motion Controller 3. This controller is considered by many as the best way to fly this drone, offering a smooth and intuitive flying experience. The updates made to the Motion Controller 3 enhance the overall flying capabilities of the drone, making it even more enjoyable to operate.
Flight Precision and Controls
Once you get used to treating the DJI Avata 2 like a joystick, you will find its precision is right up there. There is no latency, just precise movements that let you fly like a little pilot on a little fighter jet. It’s absolutely brilliant.
New Control Layout
For some reason, DJI has swapped the lock and toggle buttons around, placing them on different sides. While the change may seem odd, they physically feel very different, making it unlikely for users to mix them up. With some practice, you’ll get used to the new layout soon.
Enhanced Features
One notable improvement in the DJI Avata 2 is the ability to lift the accelerator, allowing you to reverse the drone when you’re up against an obstacle like a wall or a tree. The original motion controller lacked this function, but the new version provides greater control in tight situations.
Easy Acrobatics
The DJI Avata 2 also introduces a new feature – easy acrobatics. With just a touch of a button, you can execute one-touch slides, 180 drifts, or 360 flips, adding a fun element to your flying experience. While some FPV pilots may question the need for these features, they can be easily disabled if preferred.
Dynamic Shots with Acro Mode
For those who are not professional FPV flyers, the DJI Avatar 2 provides great fun with its 180 drift feature that captures dynamic shots. Simply set the acro mode and trigger it by tapping the four-way joystick button to control the direction of the move. Flips and drifts add excitement to the flying experience, making it an enjoyable activity for all levels of expertise.
Flight Experience
The DJI Avatar 2 offers a thrilling flying experience, resembling that of being a pilot of a mini jet. The built-in bumpers protect the props, ensuring that the drone can continue flying even when encountering obstacles. The drone’s ability to swiftly glide along the ground, avoiding crashes even when intentionally flown towards the ground, showcases its advanced maneuvering capabilities.
Resilience and Ease of Use
Despite inevitable collisions with obstacles, the DJI Avatar 2 is designed to withstand impacts and continue flying. The drone’s ability to automatically right itself and take off again within seconds, even when landing on uneven terrain, demonstrates its resilience and user-friendly features. This makes it convenient for users to resume flying without the need for manual assistance.
Turtle Mode Feature
If its landed upside down, then you can initiate Turtle mode to flip it over on the ground to get yourself up in the air again now. Turtle mode is literally a flip maneuver that the Avatar does to turn itself over off its back when its stuck on the ground again, a really useful feature that stops you having to walk over to the crash site. You do have to navigate down via the settings, control and then down to Turtle mode option. Tap. It wait a second or two and there we go. You can see its flipped over and ready for flight again um no direct shortcut button for turtle mode. Unfortunately, but it is a brilliant feature, uh to know about, and in truth, I actually spent uh a 15minute flight purposely trying to crash to test the remote takeoff ability of the Avatar 2 and the turtle mode function as well and in absolute truth. It worked 10 times in a row, uh I would crash and it could either take off straight away or the turtle mode flipped it over um, so very, very, very impressive, remote takeoff abilities um. I will admit, though, sometimes nothing will get it up in the air except a bit of manual intervention, so there you go as ever.
Performance and Design
If you have got the Avatar, the original Avatar, you may well be wondering, is it worth upgrading and to be honest bit of a hard call? Avatar 2 is faster, better designed and the goggles 3 are just way way better to use and the whole system seems to be much quicker and easier to unpack and get going and get flying.
