The Holy Stone HS600 drone has been in my possession for a few months now, and I must admit that it took me longer than I had hoped to finally sit down and write this review. I want to thank Holy Stone for their patience and understanding during my busy schedule. I have thoroughly tested this drone, examining every aspect of it to provide you with an honest review.

Holy Stone is a well-known brand in the drone industry, and it has garnered a lot of attention and popularity among drone enthusiasts. While they may not necessarily be the best in the market, their products are highly regarded by many consumers.

On paper, the Holy Stone HS600 drone is capable of 3 km image transmission and RC transmission distance, which is around 1.9 miles. The video resolution maxes out at 4K at 30 frames per second, and the photo quality is equivalent to 4K at 3840 x 2160 pixels. It also has built-in remote ID, which I verified actually works.

One of the main advantages of the Holy Stone HS600 drone is its price point. Compared to other drones on the market with similar specs, the HS600 is more affordable. Additionally, the drone is easy to fly, even for beginners, and it comes with a range of features that make flying enjoyable and hassle-free.

Wind Rating and Intelligent Flight Modes
I opened the Drone scanner app up. Well we’ll talk about that in just a few moments. Its got a wind rating of level six, which means this drone should be capable of handling wind speeds up to 31 miles per hour. It also touts some intelligent flight modes, which is impressive for a drone in this category. Its got Point of Interest, Spiral up, Image Follow, Tap Fly, Waypoints, Gesture Photo and Video Controls, Time Lapse, Ascension, and Catapult. So on paper, the HS 600 looks pretty impressive. I’m actually pretty impressed by those on paper specs.
Build Quality
When I pulled it out of the packaging and out of its carrying case, I was rather impressed by the build quality of this drone. Overall, it is Rock Solid. What I really appreciate is the battery build quality. They make it very, very simple to understand. First of all, how to install the battery just pops in just like that and then charging the battery is super easy as well. They’ve got a nice little USB-C Port here that you just plug into and all of a sudden you’re charging your battery, so real easy, no battery charging hubs which could make it a little bit more convenient, but overall USB-C charging that’s not a big deal, especially when you can charge it independently from the drone, so big ups there on the design.
Gimbal Assembly
The only thing I don’t like about the design and build of this drone is the gimbal assembly, and this is something that is usually a culprit for drones in this category.
Build Quality
It just feels cheaply made, and I dont know that I totally trust its ability to perform, especially in adverse conditions or being able to take an impact. Most gimbals are not strong when it comes to taking an impact, because that’s not really what you’re supposed to be doing anyway, but this one could break or be compromised very easily in the event of a crash.
Flight Characteristics
When you buy a drone, you really just want to fly it. The photos and videos are a great byproduct of that, but overall you want to have flight performance to be top-notch when you purchase a drone, and I just didn’t find that to be true with the HS600. The sticks on the RC have a lot of dead space in them, making it frustrating to get any type of response from this drone. This is particularly inconvenient when trying to get shots on the fly and collect as much footage and photos as possible.
Performance Pros and Cons
Let’s talk about some of the performance pros and cons. Starting with the cons, the flight characteristics of the drone are concerning. The sticks on the RC have a lot of dead space, requiring you to put the sticks to the floor most of the time to get any response from the drone. This can be frustrating when trying to ease into a shot or go a bit slower.
User Interface
When flying the Holy Stone HS600 drone, the user interface leaves much to be desired. The response to stick inputs is abrupt and aggressive, making it difficult to achieve smooth cinematic shots. While there were moments of finding a sweet spot on the sticks, overall, the user interface does not allow for easy control over the drone’s movements.
Wind Resistance
One of the major drawbacks of the Holy Stone HS600 drone is its poor wind resistance. Despite its claimed wind rating, the drone struggles even in light breezes. When faced with a headwind, the drone becomes almost immobile, making it challenging to control and navigate in outdoor settings. The wind rating provided by Holy Stone does not seem to align with the actual performance of the drone.
Flight Performance
One of the most concerning issues with the Holy Stone HS600 drone is its flight performance. The drone’s response to stick inputs is erratic, causing sudden and unpredictable movements. This makes it challenging to capture stable and smooth footage while flying the drone. The flight performance is crucial for achieving professional-grade aerial shots, and the HS600 falls short in this aspect.
What is the Toilet Bowl Effect?
I had on several occasions a really terrible toilet bowl effect on this drone. Essentially, when you have a toilet bowl, the Drone will be stationary and you may not be putting any inputs into the sticks, but all of a sudden you’ll start to notice it moving in a circular motion, becoming more aggressive and the circle will become larger until it crashes. This issue is concerning and can put the integrity of the drone at risk.
My Experience
Luckily, I’ve been flying drones for about seven to eight years now and have seen situations similar to this. While I couldn’t completely stop the toilet bowling, I was able to counteract it enough to bring the drone down slowly and land it safely. However, the landing was hard and can be classified as a minor crash, even though it was gentle.
Compass Calibration Issue
The toilet bowl effect was caused by an issue with the compass on board the drone, despite calibrating it before each flight. The fact that even after calibration the problem persisted is concerning. High-end drones like DJI can handle minor issues like this, but the HS600 struggled to maintain stability.
Should You Buy the HOLY STONE HS600?
Considering the toilet bowl effect and the issues with the compass calibration, it may not be advisable to invest in the HOLY STONE HS600. While it has some good features and capabilities, the risk of crashes due to technical issues may outweigh the benefits. It’s essential to thoroughly research and consider these factors before purchasing a drone to ensure a safe and enjoyable flying experience.
Compass Calibration
Drones can as well but lower end. Drones typically have cheaper compasses, which means you need to calibrate them more often before your flights. Despite the fact that I calibrated the compass every time before putting this in the air, I still had this toilet ball effect. So I don’t know if the compass that I have on board here is defective or what’s the issue with it. But I followed the steps, precisely as they have it listed in the manual as well as on their online resources, like they have a video tutorial that they show how to calibrate the compass. I followed step by step perfectly, had successful calibrations each time, and I still had that issue. So again, that could be unique to my drone. There may be something defective within this drone, but it’s something to be aware of, because even if it is unique to this drone, it could mean that there are other compasses out there that are defective or susceptible to defect. Keep that in mind.
Flight Time Accuracy
I need to come clean with you actually just FIB to you. I have one more con I’d like to include in this list, and it has to do with the flight time. What I’m most disappointed about is the way that Holy Stone is trying to be deceitful when it comes to the total flight time of this drone. When you look at the marketing resources for the HS600, you’ll see that they market two different battery packages for this drone, the Dual battery, and the triple battery. What they say is, if you order the Dual battery.
Flight Time
You get 56 minutes of flight time and if you order the triple battery, you get 84 minutes of flight time. However, what Holy Stone is trying to do here is to lead consumers to believe that if you purchase the Dual or triple battery Packages, you’re going to get increased flight time in one sustained flight, and that is not true. What it actually means is that if you purchase the triple battery package, you get a total flight time across all three batteries of 84 minutes. In reality, you may only get around 19 minutes of flight time per battery over 10 to 12 flights, which may not meet expectations set by the marketing tactics.
Pros
Despite the issues with flight time, there are some positive aspects to highlight. The application used to interface with the drone is rather intuitive, making it user-friendly for both beginners and experienced users.
Photo Quality
Is it the best part of the HS600 package, not by a long shot? There are a lot of places that it could be improved and overall one of the things that I really can’t stand about drones in this category, like the Holy Stone drones, is that when you take a photo, the shutter actually takes time to process the image, and it shows you sort of like an overlay that slowly disappears as the image is processed.
Video Interface
On the video side of things, I was pretty happy with the interface overall, the other portion of the app that I think could be improved upon had to do with the intelligent flight modes. Now because this drone did not win my trust, the way it needed to, I actually didn’t play around with the automated flight modes very much.
Flight Performance
You need to make every second count, and so the fact that it takes the shutter that long to process a photo and save it to your device and the memory card, it’s unacceptable. The drone didn’t win the trust of the reviewer, especially when dealing with flight times that are much shorter than what was marketed. The liability faced if something were to happen while in an intelligent flight mode is a concern.
Automated Flight Modes
I didn’t want to take that chance, so I didn’t put it in the automated flight modes. The menu for these flight modes is extremely hard to find and not well labeled. You actually have to tap through each of the icons on the screen to see what each of them means: there’s no titling on them. So you can quickly interface and know exactly where you’re going. You actually have to learn your way around that menu in order to know what you’re selecting and what mode you’re setting the drone up for.
Built-in Remote ID
One thing I was really happy with performance-wise was the built-in remote ID on this drone. Without doing any type of setup, I was able to open up the app and see the Holy Stone broadcasting remote ID. This ensures that when you put this drone in the air, you are compliant and covered with regard to remote ID. Big thumbs up for its ease of use in this aspect.
Camera Quality
Now, as for the camera quality of the HS600, I wasn’t blown away, but it did surprise me with how good it actually is. While it may not be top-notch, it still delivers decent quality images and videos.
Quality of the Video and Photos
The Holy Stone HS600 drone may not have the quality necessary for professional use, but the photos and videos it captures can still be impressive. The video quality is particularly noteworthy, coming out fairly smooth at 30 frames per second. The 4K resolution lives up to its billing, providing clear and sharp images. Unlike some drones that upscale lower resolution footage to 4K, the HS600 delivers genuine high-quality video.
Limitations for Professional Use
One of the reasons the Holy Stone HS600 may not be suitable for professional use is its inability to shoot in log or Raw format. It is limited to capturing JPEGs and MP4s, which may not be ideal for professional image editing and post-processing. When using this drone for aerial imaging, you are stuck with the files as they come off the camera without much room for manipulation.
Storage Options
The HS600 not only saves photos and videos to the SD card inserted into the drone but also allows you to configure it to save directly to the mobile device you are using to control the drone. Whether you are using a phone or tablet as the interface, you have the option to save the media directly to your device for easy access and sharing.
Camera Quality and Ease of Use
All you have to do is open up your photo library on that device, and all of them should be there, which means its really easy to access that media after youve taken it immediately after you taken it and share it wherever it needs to go. Super easy super intuitive and I got to say big UPS on not just the pretty good camera quality, but also the ease of use when it comes to sharing and distributing the media that you capture with this drone. Pretty easy, pretty simple, and I like it.
Flight Characteristics and Reliability
Now for my closing thoughts on the HS 600 drone, its just okay, its nothing that blew me away, but it also didnt disappoint me either it does okay, the biggest downside to it is that the flight characteristics are not reliable by any stretch of the imagination and consistency is just not there youre going to have a hard time adjusting to the nuances of flying this drone.
Recommendation for Beginners
However, if you can get over that hurdle – and you can just cope and deal with the fact that its not a super reliable drone flightwise its not not bad for the category, it falls into now. On that note, would I recommend this for somebody thats just getting started, flying drones or is looking to buy their first drone. The key to that is looking at the price tags. Now, when you look at the different packages for the HS 600, the most expensive and most all inclusive package that they have is their triple battery package.
