The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT is compatible with longer battery sizes such as the 2s 520mAh lipos. These batteries can fit into the drone, but they may extend out in the front. To prevent the battery from sliding back, the battery connector securely holds it in place. For optimal performance and longer flight time, it is recommended to use the larger battery tray designed for the 850mAh lipos.
Performance with Decorative Parts
The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch toothpick FPV drone initially comes with decorative TP parts that add some weight to the setup. These parts are located in the back, middle, and front of the drone. When the drone was tested with the 300 and 450 decorative pieces, it had a weight of 46 grams. Although this weight is slightly heavier, it was left unchanged for the purpose of the review. However, when these decorative parts were removed, the weight reduced to 44 grams, which is what the website advertises as 44.3 grams.
Factors Affecting Weight
The additional weight on the drone mainly comes from the metal side cages and CNC aluminum side plates. These parts are responsible for holding the camera and the decorative pieces, as well as the antenna. While these components add some extra weight, they may not contribute significantly to the overall performance of the drone.
Comparison with Baseline Setup
In comparison to the Baseline version of the drone, the HGLRC DRAKNIGHT is slightly heavier. The Baseline version weighs 40 grams, with a bigger motor and a slightly higher KV rating. The Baseline comes with an 1103 motor, whereas the DRAKNIGHT has a 103 motor with a lower KV rating of 10000. As a result, the Baseline drone offers better acro performance due to its lower weight and the presence of a bigger motor. This was expected, as seen in previous videos.
The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone: Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
Improved Performance with a Bigger Motor
The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone is designed to take your flying experience to new heights. With its lightweight design and a larger motor, this drone offers enhanced performance compared to its predecessors. The increased motor size allows for more power, resulting in better overall performance and maneuverability. Whether you are an experienced pilot or a beginner, this drone will surely impress you with its capabilities.
Comparing Video Footage
To evaluate the performance of the HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone, a comparison with a previous model, the Baseline, was conducted. In a side-by-side video comparison, the untrained eye may not notice a significant difference. The recorded videos appear quite similar in terms of quality. However, when flying the drone, you can feel the difference in throttle response. Due to the additional weight and the smaller motor, the new model requires more throttle input and a longer throttle hold to perform similar tricks as the Baseline.
Surprising Efficiency with a Smaller Motor
One area of concern was the efficiency of the smaller motor on the HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone. However, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. In a test flight using a 2s 450 battery, the drone showcased exceptional efficiency. Unlike the Baseline, which only lasted around 5 minutes on a similar flight, the DRAKNIGHT lasted close to 8 minutes. The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone: Flight Time and Efficiency
So, with the 2s 450, you can get up to 8 minutes of flight time, um, even with the extra weight and so that’s. I think the benefit of the lower KV, the smaller motor is uh for the same amount of car battery in terms of carrying around energy you’re, going to get a much longer flight time.
Camera Placement and Field of View
So it kind of depends on what you’re looking for. The other thing, that, of course, is that with the dra Knight, the camera is sitting forward here, so the props aren’t going to be in your field of view, whereas on the Baseline, the camera is more centered and the props do kind of show up at the bottom of your camera field of view.
Exposed Board Issue
Also, some people say that the board here is a little bit more exposed, osed cuzz um. You know, I suppose you know if, on a flat surface it’s not going to hit anything, but it is exposed to like tree branches. You know, can come in at a sharp angle like this. It could knock off, for example, the ceramic antenna or hit some of the parts here, maybe knock off some capacitors.
Easily Remedied Solution
This is easily remedied by just putting some foam or tape over this, it’s not a big deal but yeah some people will say that’s a deal breaker because this board is exposed.
Frame and Performance
The HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone is the perfect frame for those who prioritize performance over flight time. If you’re looking for a drone that offers exceptional Acro performance and don’t mind sacrificing longer flight durations, then the Baseline is the way to go. In a previous video on my second channel, I discussed these features in detail, so be sure to check it out if you missed it.
Battery Modification
In terms of the 2s 850 battery, I haven’t been able to test it extensively yet because I need to make some modifications. Currently, the battery connector is being blocked by the buzzer, preventing it from coming out properly. To resolve this issue, I plan on moving the connector to the inside of the frame, allowing the battery to extend the full length of the quad. This modification may even allow the battery to sit further back, enhancing the overall balance of the drone.
Prop and Vibration Concerns
During my initial tests, the drone performed well straight out of the box. The brand new props minimized vibrations and resulted in a surprisingly quiet flight experience. However, I anticipate potential issues with the props in the future. If they become bent or damaged, vibrations may transfer to the flight controller through the connector area. This is due to the connector sitting directly on top of the carbon frame, leaving no gap for vibration absorption. In my opinion, this is a design flaw that should be addressed.
Overall Assessment
Despite some potential issues, the HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone offers impressive performance and acrobatic capabilities. With the right modifications and precautions, such as ensuring prop integrity, this drone can deliver an excellent flying experience. It’s important to be aware of the potential vibration issue and make any necessary adjustments to mitigate it. Overall, this drone is a solid choice for FPV enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline-filled flying experience.
Correcting Installation Errors
One issue that needs to be addressed with the HGLRC DRAKNIGHT 2-inch Toothpick FPV Drone is the incorrect installation of the rubber grommet. This little rubber gram is meant to be shorter on the bottom and taller on top, creating a small gap. However, in the current state, the battery is touching the USB port because the grommet was not installed correctly. This is a simple fix that can be done in about 5 minutes, ensuring that there is a gap and the battery does not interfere with the USB port.
Weight-saving Options
If you’re looking to save some weight on the drone, one option is to remove the connector. Although the wires are twisted, it might be possible to directly solder the motor wires to the flight control. By doing so, the connector won’t be an issue anymore. However, it is important to check if there is enough length to do this effectively before attempting it.
Upgrading the Battery Tray
For a better flying experience, it is recommended to move the battery connector to the other side and replace the current battery tray with a larger one. This will allow you to use a larger 2s 850 battery, providing more power and longer flight times. The drone also comes with a GPU port that can be used for a camera mount. Although the provided camera is sufficient, you may opt for a different one, such as the RunCam Thumb, for better image quality and positioning.
