The DJI Neo is a small drone that offers great tracking and image stabilization capabilities. In this review, we will explore whether it is best used as a toy or a tool.

    First Impressions

After testing the DJI Neo for just 48 hours due to some minor issues, let me share my first impressions of this new category of drones. The DJI Neo, weighing 139g, comes equipped with a 4k 30 frames per second camera and a USB-C port for charging and data access. The battery lasts for about 15 minutes, although real-world usage may give you around 10-11 minutes. It is recommended to have at least three batteries for a good flight experience.

    Accessories and Specifications

Aside from the drone itself, the package includes a cable, a screwdriver, extra propellers, manuals, and more. This new category of microdrones, whether we call them toys or tools, is intriguing. DJI couldn’t miss out on this segment, especially after the success of the Huber X1. Why not explore and innovate in this field?

    Drones: Toy or Tool?

Considering the expertise of Asian manufacturers in the drone industry, it is clear that the DJI Neo is more than just a toy. While it may seem like a fun gadget at first glance, these drones are crafted with precision and technology that can be used for various practical purposes. It’s essential to acknowledge the potential of these devices beyond mere entertainment.

    Performance

The DJI Neo excels in tracking capabilities and image stabilization. The image quality is impressive, with no visible complaints. However, due to its small size, it cannot defy the laws of physics and can only follow at a maximum speed of 12 miles per hour.

    Flight Modes

The drone can operate in various flight modes, but you need to stop it to change between modes. Each mode allows for some configuration, such as the Rocket mode, which allows you to go up to 10 meters or add/remove rotation. Operating the drone with your smartphone limits the range to just 10 meters, but with some flying experience, you can still achieve decent results.

    Control Options

The DJI Neo can be operated with different options, from nothing at all to your phone via WiFi, or even connecting goggles. Using a traditional controller opens up more possibilities, such as using Oculus Sying. This expands the capabilities of the drone significantly, but be mindful of battery constraints.

    Audio Capabilities

One of the standout features of the DJI Neo is its ability to connect any microphone, including your phone’s built-in mic or a wireless one. Supposedly, it can eliminate the noise from the propellers, enhancing the overall audio quality of your recordings.

DJI NEO: Is it a Toy or a Tool?

When it comes to the DJI NEO, some may wonder if it is just a toy or a serious tool for aerial photography and videography. Let’s delve into its features and capabilities to determine its true potential.

    Flight Mode Performance

The DJI NEO offers a Follow Me mode that allows the drone to track and follow the user. It can adjust to changes in direction, even when moving backwards. However, some users may find that it struggles to follow from the front, as it tends to select a direction based on the initial take-off position.

    Audio Recording Capability

One unique feature of the DJI NEO is the ability to record audio directly from the drone. This can add a new dimension to your aerial footage, enhancing the overall experience of capturing moments from the sky.

    Dynamic Range and Performance

Despite challenging weather conditions, such as cloudy skies, the DJI NEO demonstrates decent dynamic range in its footage. This makes it a suitable option for beginners looking to explore the world of drones gradually.

    Target Audience and Usage

The DJI NEO is primarily targeted towards content creators seeking fresh perspectives and unique angles for their projects. It is designed to inspire creativity and innovation in the world of aerial photography and videography.

In conclusion, the DJI NEO strikes a balance between being a tool and a toy, offering entry-level users a gateway into the world of drones. Its solid performance and user-friendly features make it a worthwhile investment for those looking to expand their creative horizons in aerial photography.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, the DJI Neo offers a versatile range of features for both beginners and experienced drone pilots. Its tracking and stabilization capabilities make it a useful tool for capturing high-quality footage. While it may have some limitations in terms of speed and flight range, it excels in providing a user-friendly experience for aerial photography and videography enthusiasts.
