Flight Test with the DJI Mini 4 Pro
To evaluate the performance of the DJI Fly app’s latest update, a flight test was conducted using the DJI Mini 4 Pro. Even though this drone is known for its exceptional performance in windy conditions, it is crucial to see how it handles extreme wind speeds. The wind during the test was blowing at a strong and gusting speed of around 45 to 50 m/h.

Considering the challenging weather conditions, the flight test was conducted in a residential area to ensure safety. The drone was flown cautiously, taking into account the strong wind. Flying into the wind, the drone’s speed was noticeably slower, indicating the power of the wind. It is always recommended to fly into the wind and return with the wind at your back to avoid any potential issues or flyaway situations.
Challenges in Windy Conditions
The windy conditions posed a significant challenge even for a high-performing drone like the DJI Mini 4 Pro. During the flight, attempting to capture a top-down shot of a barge on Beverly Beck proved to be a daunting task. The wind made stabilization difficult, prolonging the time required to capture the desired shot. This experience shed light on a previously unnoticed aspect of the DJI Mini 4 Pro’s performance in windy conditions.

Issue with Flying Sideways in Wind
During a recent flight, I encountered an unexpected issue with my drone when trying to fly sideways in windy conditions. Despite pushing the stick to the left and attempting to navigate my drone over a barge for a top-down shot, the drone was still getting pushed by the wind. Even switching to sport mode did not resolve the problem. I had to fly diagonally just to get back to my desired location. This issue may be familiar to experienced drone flyers who have their cameras facing downwards at a 90-degree angle.
Painful Attempt at Getting a Top-Down Shot
After struggling to complete the top-down shot due to the wind pushing my drone, I decided to try some quick shots to ensure that the drone was functioning properly. Some may view this as unnecessary, but I have learned from past experiences that it is important to test the drone’s functionality. In the past, there was an issue with the DJI Fly app crashing when attempting to select an object for a quick shot. This resulted in a loss of visibility and required a restart of the app. DJI eventually fixed this issue, but it highlights the importance of performing these tests.
DJI Fly App Update 1.12.8 – Full Review of NEW Features
The DJI Fly App has recently received an update, version 1.12.8, bringing along some exciting new features for drone pilots. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive review of these new features and discuss how they can enhance the flying experience.
Drone Rules Made SIMPLE!
One of the standout features of the DJI Fly App update is the inclusion of a simplified drone rules section. By inputting their location information, users can quickly retrieve the relevant rules and restrictions they need to be aware of before taking off. This feature is particularly useful for both beginners and experienced pilots as it ensures compliance with local regulations and promotes safe flying practices.
Return-to-Home Test
During our testing, we observed an interesting behavior during the return-to-home test. Although the wind was strong, the drone managed to make its way back successfully. However, upon rotation to face the same direction as takeoff, it got caught sideways by the wind and veered off course. This highlights the importance of manual intervention once the drone has reached the home point or is above it. By canceling the return-to-home function and taking manual control, the pilot can avoid potential mishaps caused by unpredictable wind patterns.
Automatic Mode vs Manual Control
When faced with challenging wind conditions, leaving the drone in automatic mode may not always be the best option. As demonstrated during our test, the drone got blown off course when relying solely on the automatic return-to-home feature. By switching to manual control, the pilot regains full command of the drone’s movements, allowing for better navigation and adaptation to changing wind patterns. This serves as a reminder to always be vigilant and ready to take control when necessary.
