Introduction
The DJI Mini series has been a favorite among drone enthusiasts, offering compact size and excellent functionality. However, some users felt that the previous models lacked certain professional features. With the release of the DJI Mini 4 Pro, the company has addressed these concerns and delivered a drone that truly lives up to its label.
The Surprise of DJI Mini 4 Pro
When it comes to technological devices, it’s no surprise that upgrades and new releases are a constant in the market. Smartphones, in particular, have set the trend for yearly upgrades. However, I never expected the same level of regular upgrades for drones. That is until the DJI Mini 4 Pro came along. This release took me by complete surprise, as I had no prior knowledge of its existence. I thought the Mini 3 Pro was the pinnacle of the mini series, but DJI has proven me wrong. Let’s dive into the details and understand why.
Familiar Design with Improvements
The design of the DJI Mini 4 Pro might feel familiar at first glance, but it also introduces some notable changes. DJI has smartly chosen to maintain the aesthetics of the Mini 3 series while making notable improvements. The lightweight body of the drone remains the same, ensuring it stays within the 249 G weight limit, even with the new standard battery.
Camera Upgrades and Filter Compatibility
One significant change in the Mini 4 Pro is the camera. While the sensor size remains the same as the Mini 3 series, there have been changes to the filter threads it requires. This means that filters compatible with the Mini 3 or Mini 3 Pro won’t work with the new model. If you already own filters for the previous models, it’s time to invest in some new ones.
Improved Flight Performance and Features
In terms of flight performance and features, the Mini 4 Pro does not disappoint. It offers an enhanced flying experience, providing greater stability and precision. DJI has incorporated advanced flight control technologies, allowing for smoother movements and improved maneuverability. Whether you’re a professional filmmaker or an amateur drone enthusiast, these improvements will surely enhance your aerial photography and videography skills.
Extended Battery Life for Longer Flights
One of the standout features of the DJI Mini 4 Pro is its extended battery life. With the new battery, you can enjoy longer flights without worrying about running out of power. This provides the opportunity for more extensive aerial shoots and exploration. DJI has once again prioritized the user experience by considering the importance of extended battery life.

Improved Design and Features
Now, of course, if you don’t use ND filters or other types of filters, then none of this really matters but either way it’s something that potential buyers should just know in case. The other change here is with the OA sensors. You can see now that the front ones on the Mini 4 Pro are angled off to the left and the right, and it’s a similar setup for the ones up top here. These fish-eye obstacle avoidance sensors give the drone the ability to see obstacles in every direction, which is a first for the Mini series. And yes, I am saying that this has full 360 obstacle avoidance. We will discuss how these sensors work a little bit later in this video.
Enhancements on the Bottom and Back
The bottom of this drone is where you’ll instantly notice the changes made in the form of the new ambient sensor here and LED light, which is a much-welcome addition, especially for those who tend to fly in low light conditions. You also have a new vent pattern which helps this heat more efficiently and keep the drone cooler than ever before.
The back of the Mini 4 Pro is the most familiar, and in more ways than one, you’ll notice that it looks exactly like the Mini 3 and the Mini 3 Pro and operates the same, meaning you can actually use the same batteries from the other.
Improved Battery Compatibility
The DJI Mini 4 Pro brings some exciting updates to the table, and one of the standout improvements is its battery compatibility. Unlike its predecessor, the Mini 3 series, this new drone now allows users to use the same filters. This may seem like a fair trade-off for those who value battery compatibility. After all, having the freedom to use the same filters outweighs the inconvenience of not being able to change propellers.
An Inconvenient Propeller Design
Unfortunately, the propellers on the Mini 4 Pro have remained unchanged. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the propellers themselves, the issue lies in how they are attached. Just like the previous model, users need to be cautious not to strip or break the screws while changing the propellers. This can be a hassle, and it would have been great if DJI had found a way to improve this design aspect.
Camera Upgrades
The Mini 4 Pro boasts some impressive upgrades when it comes to its camera capabilities. It excels at handling harsh lighting conditions and rendering deeper colors. In fact, the main camera on the Mini 4 Pro is identical to the one found on the Air 3. If you are familiar with the qualities of the Air 3’s camera setup, you can expect similar results here.
There is quite a surprising amount of detail that this small drone is capable of capturing. Even to this day, it is impressive how much clarity and sharpness can be achieved. The default color profile offers saturated colors that are pleasing to the eye, without being overly intense. However, DJI has also introduced two additional color profiles, namely dlog M and Hlg. While these may not be the highest-end options available, they provide users with more flexibility and creative possibilities for color grading.
Vertical Shooting Remains Exclusive to Mini Drones
Vertical shooting has become increasingly popular among drone users, and the Mini 4 Pro continues to support this feature. Interestingly, it appears that vertical shooting will only be available on mini drones in DJI’s lineup. This feature allows users to capture unique perspectives and create stunning aerial shots that cannot be achieved with traditional horizontal photography.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro brings noteworthy improvements to the table. While it may lack the convenience of easily replaceable propellers, the improved battery compatibility and camera capabilities make this drone an excellent choice for both enthusiasts and professionals. Whether you are capturing stunning landscapes or engaging in vertical shooting, the Mini 4 Pro is a reliable and feature-packed option.
Improved Landscape Frame Guide Feature
I barely ever use the feature of my mini3 Pro but it’s nice to know that I can, if need be. I’d actually prefer shooting in landscape and using the frame guide feature that you can find in the menus. Now I first tested this out with the Mavic 3 and I feel like it offers a bit more in terms of framing another feature.
Enhanced 48 Megapixel Feature
I never particularly cared about the 48-megapixel feature in the Mini 3 Pro because the pictures it produced were often too dark to make out the details. However, with the Mini 4 Pro, I decided to give it a go and was fairly surprised. The Mini 4 Pro has definitely improved the feature, and I can now see myself using it to crop in on certain details, maybe for things like roof inspections or something similar.
Upgraded Slow Motion Capability
Slow motion isn’t something I particularly find useful or use on my personal phone, nor did I use it on the Mini 3 Pro. I personally just couldn’t see a use case for it, especially because it was only available in 1080p on the Mini 3 Pro. However, with the Mini 4 Pro, this is something that I definitely intend to use. It has been upgraded, and now you can do slow motion in 4K at 100 frames per second. This gives you options in getting better quality and allows you to crop in on that footage if needed, something that might be difficult to do with only 1080p footage.
Active Track in Slow Motion
The latest feature of the DJI Mini 4 Pro that has everyone buzzing is the ability to use it with active track for slow motion shots. This addition is incredibly enticing for those looking to capture epic moments in slow motion. While using the Mini 3 Pro, I never really considered how it would perform in low light due to its small sensor size. However, I decided to put the low light capabilities of the Mini 4 Pro to the test, and I must say, I was fairly satisfied.
Surprising Results in Low Light
It’s true that one cannot expect too much from a mini drone with such a small sensor. However, considering its size, the Mini 4 Pro did a pretty good job in low light conditions. Although technically only one of the samples could be classified as true low light, it’s important to remember that the best footage is the footage you have. In most cases, you’ll be capturing images of subjects that are at least partially illuminated, so the Mini 4 Pro’s performance is more than sufficient for everyday use.
Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance
One of the reasons I initially purchased the Mavic 3 was because of its omnidirectional obstacle avoidance feature. I never thought DJI would bring this feature to the mini series of drones, but to my surprise, they did with the Mini 4 Pro. Even with fewer sensors than its larger counterparts, the obstacle avoidance feature works impressively well. During my first active track test, the Mini 4 Pro adeptly dodged obstacles and flew like a seasoned professional. Kudos to DJI for including this feature in their mini drones.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is a true game-changer for mini drones. Its ability to use active track in slow motion opens up a whole new world of cinematic possibilities. Moreover, its surprisingly good performance in low light conditions and the inclusion of omnidirectional obstacle avoidance make it a versatile and reliable choice for aspiring filmmakers and drone enthusiasts alike. Don’t let its small size fool you, the Mini 4 Pro packs a punch.
Active Track Feature
The DJI Mini 4 Pro has introduced an upgraded active track feature that sets it apart from its predecessors. The addition of sensors allows the drone to track the subject in every direction, providing unlimited possibilities. Unlike previous drones that limited tracking to a specific direction, the Mini 4 Pro offers full 360-degree manual tracking through a new Circle-based input. This feature includes two circles where users can set the height and distance they want the drone to follow them. DJI deserves credit for thinking outside the box and improving upon an already useful feature.
Waypoints
In a surprising move, DJI has included waypoints in the Mini 4 Pro. This feature was previously only available in higher-end models like the Mavic 3, making it one of the reasons many users upgraded. The addition of this feature to a smaller drone like the Mini 4 Pro is a game-changer. The advantages of executing waypoints in smaller spaces are evident. It allows for more precise and controlled movements, which is ideal for capturing shots in tight or crowded areas. DJI’s decision to incorporate this feature showcases their commitment to providing a comprehensive flying experience regardless of the drone’s size.
New Transmission System
The DJI Mini 4 Pro also boasts the new DJI 04 transmission system, which was initially released with the Air 3. This transmission system ensures stable and reliable communication between the drone and the remote control. It provides a seamless connection, minimizing the risk of signal loss or interference. This is crucial when operating a drone, as a stable connection is necessary to maintain control and avoid accidents. DJI’s decision to include the latest transmission system confirms their commitment to staying at the forefront of drone technology and providing users with the best flying experience possible.
Overall, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is a remarkable drone that offers several new and improved features. The active track feature’s enhanced capabilities provide unmatched tracking possibilities, allowing users to capture dynamic shots from all directions. The inclusion of waypoints in a smaller drone is a pleasant surprise, contributing to its versatility and adaptability in various shooting environments. Additionally, the new transmission system ensures a stable connection, further enhancing the user experience. DJI continues to set the benchmark for the drone industry, and the Mini 4 Pro is a testament to their commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
DJI MINI 4 PRO REVIEW: The MINI is finally PRO
Maximum Range Upgrade
With the introduction of the Mini 4 Pro, DJI has implemented an upgrade that focuses on increasing the maximum range of the drone. Personally, I don’t see much of a difference, as I prefer to keep my drone within visual range. However, I must admit that the 1080p 60 FPS feed offered by the Mini 4 Pro is enjoyable. That being said, I have never had an issue with the 1080p 30 FPS feed on the Mini 3 Pro. So, while the additional frames per second are a welcome addition, it’s worth noting that the 1080p 60 FPS feed isn’t consistent when switching over to video mode, dropping down to a 1080p 30 FPS feed, similar to what you would get on the Mini 3 Pro.
Range Test
While range isn’t particularly beneficial to me, especially not the maximum 12 km that the DJI Mini 4 Pro can achieve, I did conduct a range test with the Mini 3 Pro previously. During the test, I was able to reach a little over 9000 ft. However, I must caution viewers that the results of that test may have been affected by the minerals in the mountains. So, before you watch the video of the range test, please keep in mind that the accuracy of the test may be compromised.
DJI MINI 4 PRO REVIEW: The MINI is finally PRO
Wind Resistance
If you do the wind resistance rating for the mini4 pro is basically the same as it is on the mini3 pro. I haven’t been able to have the Mini 4 Pro test in high winds, but I have used my Mini 3 Pro in some exceptionally high winds and even though it does move around considerably in winds over 30 mph. If you are looking for a drone that is going to stay still in the wind I’d say, you can get away with quite a bit, but this isn’t really what it’s actually built for in the first place, so do be careful.
Battery Life
Now, when it comes to battery life, you’re probably expecting the mini4 pro to be closer to that of the Mini 3 Pro so a while back. I did a video where I tested active track on the mini3 pro as well as the battery life of I forget which battery I was using at the time. Probably the intelligent flight battery Battery Plus, I ended up getting about 22 minutes and 3 seconds of battery life give or take. I did also do the same active track test twice for the mini4 pro and the first time. I did this test with a standard battery that it comes with. I was able to get around 23 minutes and 24 seconds of battery life give or take also, and on my second test, I was able to get about 27 minutes and 33 seconds. Of course take that that with a grain of salt also now, I think it’s only right to say that when I did do this test for the mini3 pro, I did do this in much warmer weather, which can have battery sucking effects on a drone there’s.
Upgrade in Battery Capacity
DJI has finally released its highly-anticipated Mini 4 Pro drone, and it comes with some much-needed upgrades. One of the major improvements is the upgrade in the intelligent flight battery. However, there is one slight disappointment for those living at higher altitudes like myself. The intelligent flight battery plus has not been upgraded, unlike the standard battery. It would have made perfect sense to upgrade both batteries, especially considering the increased battery capacity and lighter weight of the Mini 4 Pro. Despite this, the intelligent flight battery plus still provides extra battery life, which is always a plus for drone enthusiasts.
The Potential for More Battery Life
I can’t help but wonder just how much more battery life we could have squeezed out of a Mini drone if DJI had made it even lighter. Nevertheless, the Mini 4 Pro with its improved battery capacity and enhanced overall performance is definitely something to consider. It’s always exciting to see how much further we can push the limits of drone technology.
The Question on Everyone’s Mind: Should You Upgrade?
Now, let’s address the burning question on everyone’s mind: Should you invest in the Mini 4 Pro? The answer, as with most things, is a bit subjective. On one hand, the Mini 3 Pro still offers great value for money and can be found at much cheaper prices. If budget is a concern and you don’t need the latest features, the Mini 3 Pro might be the better option for you.
Consider the Upgrades
On the other hand, the Mini 4 Pro brings a host of upgrades that make it an attractive choice. The improved battery capacity, lighter weight, and overall enhanced performance make it a top contender in the drone market. If you’re a professional or a serious drone enthusiast who values the latest features and is willing to spend a bit more, the Mini 4 Pro is definitely worth considering.
DJI MINI 4 PRO REVIEW: The MINI is finally PRO
Improved Camera Sensors
If you look hard enough, the camera sensors on the Mini 4 Pro have definitely seen some improvements. But if you take the time to learn color grading or just learn how to edit your videos from the Mini 3 Pro in general, I’m pretty sure you can get very close to what the Mini 4 Pro can do and maybe even match exactly what the Mini 4 Pro would look like just from the camera.
Added Pro Features
On top of this, it’s great that the Mini 4 Pro has added Pro features such as waypoints and Omni Direct directional obstacle avoidance, as well as tracking in other modes it wasn’t available in before. But the question is: how much does that actually mean to you? How much will you actually use those kinds of features?
Obstacle Avoidance
Now, I mean obstacle avoidance, that’s something you pretty much will have to use when you use a drone, so anybody can benefit from the obstacle avoidance sensors on the Mini 4 Pro. It provides an extra layer of safety and can prevent accidents or collisions with obstacles.
Waypoints
However, waypoints are something that a lot of people may not use, especially if it’s their first drone, or even if it’s their second. Waypoints allow you to pre-program a flight path for your drone, which can be useful for capturing specific shots or creating cinematic footage. But for many casual drone users, this may not be an essential feature.
Joe Tracking
On the flip side, I would definitely say yes, if you are someone who is going to utilize all of these features, then I can definitely say that you should go for the Mini 4 Pro. I can also definitely say that I personally will be doing just that. I actually tend to use waypoints as well as auto-track a lot, and it’s good to know that I can now, especially being a part 107 certified pilot.
The DJI Mini 4 Pro offers improved camera sensors and added Pro features such as waypoints and obstacle avoidance. While some of these features may not be essential for all drone users, they can be valuable for those who want to enhance their aerial photography and videography skills. So, if you are someone who is going to make the most out of these features, the Mini 4 Pro is definitely worth considering.
Size and Features
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is a drone that offers a perfect balance between size and functionality. While it may not deliver the same level of imaging detail as the Mavic 3, its compact size and expanded feature set make it a much more manageable option for various jobs.
Suitable for Beginners
Even if you’re not an expert in drone photography or videography, the Mini 4 Pro is still a great choice for beginners. One of its standout features is the obstacle avoidance sensors, which allow the drone to see in all directions. This feature alone is worth considering, as it can significantly enhance the overall flying experience and ensure a safe flight.
The Mini 4 Pro vs. Mini 3 Pro
When comparing the Mini 4 Pro to its predecessor, the Mini 3 Pro, there are notable differences. It can be likened to the difference between cooking your favorite food from scratch or simply picking it up from a restaurant. The Mini 3 Pro represents the ingredients you’d have to use to cook your favorite dish, while the Mini 4 Pro is like getting the food from a restaurant and having it almost exactly as you expect it.
Customization and Personalization
Just like when you order food from a restaurant, you might want to add your own touch to it. Similarly, with the Mini 4 Pro, you have the option to customize and personalize your flying experience. Perhaps you want to add your own filters or effects to the footage, or maybe you have a specific style of shooting that you prefer. The Mini 4 Pro allows you to do all of this and more, ensuring that you can make the drone and its output truly yours.
